A broken one reduces it. In one experiment participants did a strength exercise, and where the log showed the run intact roughly 66% chose to do another, against about 58% where a glitch had broken it. Small, but it went the wrong way.
The effect comes from the log, not from your actual history. This is the uncomfortable part. Identical past behaviour, differently displayed, produced different subsequent choices. The number was doing the work, independently of what the person had really done.
