Exercise snacks, movement snacks and deskercise are three different things

An exercise snack is a bout of exercise lasting five minutes or less, done at least twice a day, most days of the week. That is the definition used in the 2025 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine that put the term on a proper footing, and it has specific numbers in it.

The other two terms in the title are not synonyms for it, though every article on the internet treats them as though they are. Here is the actual map. If you would rather do one than read about one, the timer puts an exercise into every break.

Exercise snack: the term with a definition behind it

Ahmed and colleagues, publishing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2025, pooled eleven trials covering 414 inactive adults. To be included, a protocol had to meet all of these:

  • Bouts of five minutes or less each.

  • At least twice a day.

  • Three to seven days a week.

  • Sustained over four to twelve weeks.

That is the definition. Not “a bit of movement”. A specific frequency, a specific duration, and a specific dose over time.

Two things stand out about what the pooled results showed, and the second one is the one nobody quotes.

What worked. Exercise snacks significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness, at moderate certainty of evidence. That is a real headline, because cardiorespiratory fitness is among the better-evidenced predictors of long-term health.

What did not. The same analysis found no significant effect on body composition, blood pressure or blood lipids. None. If you came here because a wellness site told you that two minutes of squats between meetings would lower your blood pressure or change your body composition, the best available evidence says it will not.

The third number should interest anyone who has ever quit a fitness plan: 91% adherence and 83% retention. People kept doing this, which almost no structured programme manages. What makes exercise snacks worth taking seriously is not that they do more than exercise. It is that people actually do them.

Two smaller studies fill in the picture:

  • Little and colleagues, 2019, European Journal of Applied Physiology. In a small trial of 28 sedentary adults over six weeks, three all-out 20-second cycling efforts spread across the day produced about a 4% gain in VO2peak, which was not statistically different from a traditional interval session. Small sample, so hold it loosely.

  • Jenkins and colleagues, 2019, Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism. Three vigorous stair-climbing bouts a day, sixty steps each, three days a week for six weeks, improved fitness and peak power in sedentary young adults.

Then there is the observational cousin. Stamatakis and colleagues, 2022, in Nature Medicine looked at 25,241 UK Biobank participants who did not formally exercise and found that roughly three minutes a day of vigorous incidental activity, in bouts of one to two minutes, was associated with 38 to 40% lower all-cause mortality. That is an association in observational data, not proof that three minutes of stair climbing extends your life. Anyone writing “three minutes a day cuts your death risk by 40%” has quietly promoted a correlation to a cause.

Movement snack: the same idea with the intensity taken out

“Movement snack” is the plain-English variant, and it is a genuinely useful term precisely because it is vaguer.

An exercise snack implies effort. Stair climbing, squats, something that raises your heart rate. A movement snack is any deliberate interruption of sitting: walking to the window, two minutes of pacing on a call, a set of shoulder rolls. Less demanding, less measurable, and much easier to say to someone who does not think of themselves as a person who exercises.

The distinction matters because the two things are supported by different literatures with different outcomes. This is the point the whole article exists to make.

  • Exercise snacks are studied for fitness. The outcome is cardiorespiratory fitness, and the evidence supports it.

  • Movement breaks are studied for glucose, blood pressure, fatigue and mood. The outcome is metabolic and how you feel, and the evidence supports that.

If you conflate them, you end up believing that standing up every half hour improves your fitness, or that doing squats twice a day controls your post-lunch glucose. Neither claim is supported by the study that supports the other one.

Here is the breaking-up-sitting side of it, briefly, because it is the half most desk workers actually need:

  • Duran and colleagues, 2023. A small Columbia study of eleven adults across eight-hour sitting days, testing five different break schedules. Five minutes of walking every thirty minutes cut the post-meal glucose spike by 58% and was the only dose that significantly improved glucose. Every break dose lowered systolic blood pressure by 4 to 5 mmHg and improved fatigue and mood, except the one-minute-hourly condition. Eleven people, so treat it as a strong hint rather than a settled fact.

  • Dunstan and colleagues, 2012, Diabetes Care. Nineteen adults. Breaking up sitting every twenty minutes with two minutes of walking lowered post-meal glucose by 24 to 30% and insulin by 23%.

  • Yin and colleagues, 2024. A meta-analysis of thirteen crossover trials found breaking up sitting at least every thirty minutes beat less frequent breaks, but for glucose only, and the authors rate the overall quality of evidence as low.

  • Wennberg and colleagues, 2016, BMJ Open. Three minutes of light walking every thirty minutes significantly lowered fatigue at four and seven hours. It had no effect on executive function or memory.

Keep that last sentence. Interrupting sitting does not seem to sharpen thinking. Three separate studies measured cognition and found nothing.

Deskercise: the word nobody says out loud

And then there is deskercise, a portmanteau that sounds like it was focus-grouped in 2011 and has aged accordingly.

It is not a bad idea, it is a bad name. What it usually describes is the seated end of the spectrum: neck rolls, wrist circles, seated leg extensions, the calendar-of-office-stretches genre. Almost all of it is stretching, almost none of it is loading, and it is the one category here with a genuinely awkward evidence problem.

Chen and colleagues, 2018, in Physical Therapy, reviewed 27 randomised trials of interventions for desk-worker neck and shoulder pain. Strengthening exercise worked, at moderate-quality evidence. Stretching was no better than not stretching. Ergonomic changes alone did not work. Education alone did not work.

So the most popular thing in the deskercise genre, stretching at your desk, is the thing with the weakest support in it. If your neck hurts after eight hours at a laptop, the evidence points at strengthening rather than at neck rolls. That is inconvenient for the format, because a photo of someone doing a shoulder stretch in an office chair makes a better stock image than a photo of someone doing push-ups against a filing cabinet.

None of this is medical advice, and pain that persists is a conversation with a clinician rather than with a blog.

Why five minutes counts at all

There is one policy fact that quietly underwrites this entire category, and it is worth knowing because it is the cleanest thing on this page.

The 2018 US Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, second edition, removed the old rule that activity had to come in bouts of at least ten minutes to count. Before that, a two-minute effort was officially worth nothing towards your weekly total. Now it counts. The headline message of the guidelines is “move more and sit less”.

For reference, the World Health Organization’s 2020 guidelines ask for 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous, plus muscle strengthening on two or more days a week. WHO also says to limit sedentary time, but it explicitly declined to put a number on how many hours or how often you should break them up. If you see an article claiming WHO recommends standing up every thirty minutes, that article is inventing a guideline.

Worth adding, since it is the reason any of this exists: WHO’s 2024 fact sheet puts 31% of adults worldwide below the activity guidelines, which is about 1.8 billion people.

A working glossary

Since the terms are the point of this page, here they are in one list.

  1. Exercise snack. A bout of exercise of five minutes or less, at least twice a day, three to seven days a week. Studied for cardiorespiratory fitness. Evidence: moderate certainty for fitness, nothing for body composition, blood pressure or lipids.

  2. Movement snack. The plain-English, lower-intensity version. Any deliberate interruption of sitting. Best supported for energy, mood, fatigue and post-meal glucose.

  3. Movement break or activity break. The same thing, framed by time rather than by effort. This is the term the 2026 desk-worker research uses.

  4. Exercise snacking. The verb form, common in the academic literature. Same definition as exercise snack.

  5. VILPA. Vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity. The Stamatakis term for one-to-two-minute bouts of hard effort occurring naturally in daily life, like climbing stairs fast. Observational evidence only.

  6. Micro workout. A marketing term with no agreed definition. Usually means a short structured session, five to fifteen minutes, which is longer than an exercise snack.

  7. Deskercise. Seated or desk-adjacent movement, mostly stretching. No formal definition and the weakest evidence base in this list.

  8. Breaking up sitting. Not exercise at all. The practice of interrupting sedentary time at intervals, studied mainly for glucose and blood pressure.

What this looks like on a Tuesday

The practical version is unglamorous, which is the point.

  • Every focus block, whatever length you use. Stand up when the timer goes. That is the movement break.

  • Twice a day, minimum, make one of them count. Twenty air squats. Ten push-ups against the desk. A flight of stairs at speed. That is the exercise snack, and it is the dose the meta-analysis actually studied.

  • Load rather than stretch, if your neck and shoulders are the problem. Twenty-seven trials point that way.

  • Do not expect it to change the scales. It will not, and the study says so.
