50/10 pomodoro against 25/5: how to pick the ratio
Nobody measured 25 minutes and found it optimal, which makes a 50/10 pomodoro exactly as defensible as the classic. A man with a tomato-shaped kitchen timer picked 25, and forty years of software copied him. So the question is open, and it is more interesting than it looks.
Short answer, before the argument. Over the same stretch of the day a 50/10 pomodoro and a 25/5 hand you the same amount of focus and the same amount of rest. The only thing that changes is how often you stop, and that single variable is worth thinking about properly rather than adopting a default. Nobody derived 25 minutes from anything
It is worth being precise about this, because a great deal of internet advice treats the classic interval as though it fell out of a laboratory.
It did not. Francesco Cirillo was a university student in the late 1980s, struggling to get through any meaningful stretch of study, and he made a bet with himself that he could concentrate for ten minutes if somebody was counting. He counted on a kitchen timer moulded into the shape of a tomato. Twenty-five minutes is where he settled after that, by trial and by feel.
That is a good story and a sound method. It is not a finding. There is no experiment establishing 25 as the point where attention gives out, no control group, no measured population, and nothing to be faithful to. Which means the ratio is a design decision you are allowed to make, and the entire debate about it rests on reasoning rather than on evidence.
Peer-reviewed work on the technique itself barely exists. About four studies, and they are not flattering. Testing 94 university students across a two-hour session, Smits and colleagues found no significant difference in productivity, task completion or flow between the classic interval, Flowtime and simply taking breaks when you felt like it. The people on fixed 25-minute cycles got tired faster than the self-regulated group and lost motivation faster too. Anyone selling you a ratio, this page included, should have to say that out loud first.
The 50/10 pomodoro arithmetic almost nobody runs
Take a six-hour working stretch and put each ratio through it.
25/5. Each cycle is thirty minutes, so six hours holds twelve of them. Twelve blocks of 25 gives you 300 minutes of focus. Twelve breaks of five gives you 60 minutes of rest.
50/10. Each cycle is an hour, so six hours holds six. Six blocks of 50 gives you 300 minutes of focus. Six breaks of ten gives you 60 minutes of rest.
Identical. Three hundred minutes of work and an hour of break, either way.
Everyone argues about these ratios as though one of them buys more working time than the other. Neither does. What you are actually choosing between is twelve interruptions and six, and between blocks of 25 and blocks of 50. Everything else in the comparison is noise, and once you see it that way the decision gets much easier to make.
The evidence has something to say, and it points both ways
Here is the awkward part. Two separate bodies of research bear on this, and they do not agree about which direction to lean.
What favours stopping more often
The sitting literature likes frequent breaks. A meta-analysis of 13 crossover trials by Yin and colleagues in 2024 found that interrupting sitting at least every thirty minutes beat less frequent patterns, though only for glucose and with the authors rating the overall evidence quality as low. A small Columbia trial of eleven adults, run by Duran and colleagues in 2023, tested five doses across eight hours of sitting and found five minutes of walking every thirty minutes was the only one that significantly improved glucose, cutting the post-meal spike by 58%. Every break dose in that study lowered systolic blood pressure by four to five mmHg, and all but the lightest reduced fatigue and improved mood.
On attention there is Ariga and Lleras, writing in Cognition in 2011, who found that brief switches to an unrelated task roughly every ten minutes prevented the usual decline across a forty-minute vigilance task while every control group declined. Read narrowly, that is an argument for interrupting yourself often.
What favours the 50/10 pomodoro instead
The workplace break literature leans the other way. Pooling 22 samples and 2,335 people in PLOS ONE, Albulescu and colleagues found short breaks reliably raised vigour and cut fatigue, at d=0.36 and d=0.35, while task performance failed to reach significance and, narrowed to cognitively demanding work, came out at essentially zero. Buried in the same paper is the detail that matters here: the longer breaks in the sample were associated with better subsequent performance than the shorter ones. Ten minutes sits at the better end of that range and five does not.
And in 2026 a large study of desk workers tested break frequency directly. Of 19,342 US adults recruited, 11,484 completed a fortnight of five-minute movement breaks at intervals they chose themselves. Breaking hourly came out nearly as effective as breaking every half hour and was substantially easier to keep up. It was uncontrolled and self-reported, so hold it loosely, but sustainability is exactly the axis this decision turns on.
So the health case tilts toward 25/5 and the work case tilts toward 50/10, and there is no study that resolves it because nobody has run the head-to-head. Anybody who tells you otherwise has not read the papers.
Choose by what is on your screen
Since the research will not decide for you, decide by the shape of the task.
Run 25/5 for work that arrives in pieces. Review queues, email, admin, marking, support tickets, phone calls, anything you can finish or abandon at any moment without losing your place. The frequent stops cost you nothing because there was nothing to hold in your head.
Run 50/10 for work that has to be loaded before it moves. Writing, debugging, design, analysis, anything where the first stretch of the block is spent remembering where you were. Here the stops are expensive, so you want half as many of them.
Run 25/5 when you are avoiding the work. A short block is easier to agree to, and starting is the actual problem on those days. Nobody has ever failed to begin something because the timer was too short.
Run 50/10 when you have already started and it is going well. The worst moment for a countdown to fire is the moment something finally clicks.
Run 25/5 after lunch, if glucose is a reason you care about this. That is the window where the frequency evidence is strongest, and it costs you one afternoon of shorter blocks rather than a permanent change of habit.

The hybrid, and why we are labelling it a guess
The obvious move is to take both. Run a 50-minute block, but stand up and move for sixty seconds at the halfway mark without ending the session, then take the full ten minutes at the end. On paper that gives you a break every 25 minutes for the sitting evidence and a 50-minute runway for the work.
We like it and several of us run it. It is also completely untested. No study has examined a mid-block movement pause of that kind, nobody knows whether the interruption costs more in attention than the standing gains in circulation, and the honest label for it is a plausible idea rather than a recommendation. Try it if it appeals. Do not let anyone tell you it is evidence-based, and that includes us.
What neither ratio is going to do
Neither one will make you smarter, and the number on the timer has never been the interesting variable anyway.
Movement in the break is a different matter, and its results are narrower than the productivity internet claims. Energy improves. Mood improves. Both hold for roughly half an hour. Thinking does not improve, in study after study, and once selective publication is corrected for, the short-term cognitive return on exercise sits close to zero. The most useful finding in the whole area is a flat one: stopping to move does not cost you output. That is a licence to take the break, not a promise about what it buys.
